Hekkie Budler scored a hard-earned 12 round unanimous points decision over Doctor Ntsele to retain his IBO Africa junior flyweight title at Emperors Palace in Kempton Park on Tuesday night.
Judges Isaac Tshabalala and Ace Makalauza scored it 119-110 and 117-114 whilst judge Lulama Mtya had it 117-112.
However, the judge’s scorecards were not a true reflection of the fast paced fight in which Ntsele possibly won at least four or five rounds.
Budler (48.56 kg) from Gauteng came out with a fast two-handed attack from the first bell as he took the fight to the taller Ntsele (48.70 kg) from the Free State.
However, in the middle rounds Ntsele began scoring with some good combinations as he backed up Budler.
Budler picked up the pace through rounds ten to twelve to finish strongly in an action packed fight which gave referee Andile Matika very little work.
Budler improves his record to 13-0; 4 and Ntsele drops to 9-4-1; 3.
The tournament was presented by African Ring in conjunction with Golden Gloves Promotions.
