Will Tomlinson To Face Malcolm Klassen on May 16th
Former two-time champion Malcolm Klassen will venture into the lion's den when he challenges unbeaten Will Tomlinson for the IBO super-featherweight championship in Australia on May 16.
Confirming the news on Wednesday, promoter Rodney Berman said this was a prime opportunity for Klassen to get back onto the international radar.
"The IBO guarantees credibility, so Malcolm is well set to bounce back."
Klassen is very much a "mood" fighter: he can be brilliant or ordinary, depending which mood takes him on the night. He's had some outstanding performances in a career dating back 14 years, but he's also slacked off at inopportune moments.
"The truth is that he can beat anyone at the weight – if he wants to," said Berman.
Despite being 20-0, Tomlinson doesn't appear to be the best in the division. He has been well matched, having ascended to the title without beating a single name fighter.
The danger for Klassen, of course, is venturing into the Australian's backyard, where he will be given no favours. He will have to be at his very best.
Not that this challenge will deter Klassen, who at 31 knows that such chances will be few and far between at this advanced stage of his career.
